The raven on the Steuernagel coat of arms: a rediscovered treasure at L’Écrevisse

At the heart of L’Écrevisse, every stone tells a story. Among the many remarkable features of this building, which dates back to 1603, one recently rediscovered detail is now attracting a great deal of attention: a carved raven depicting the Steuernagel coat of arms.

An exceptional discovery in March

Long concealed beneath a thick layer of ivy, this ancient raven on the left-hand side of the façade remained hidden for many years. It was not until March that it was brought to light, revealing the full richness of its decoration and its historical significance.

This rediscovery highlights a forgotten element of architectural heritage, bearing witness to the building’s prestigious past.

The Steuernagel family coat of arms

This corbel bears the coat of arms of the Steuernagel family, on whose behalf Georges Steuernagel, the mayor, had this building constructed in 1603. This heraldic symbol is not unique: it was also affixed to the corbel of another house built around the same time, beyond the city walls.

The same coat of arms can also be found in the courtyard of 32A, further evidence of the influence and mark left by this family on local history.

A building at the heart of the town’s history

At the time of its construction, the building stood near the western city wall, which, around 1600, ran alongside the wash house. Part of this wall is still visible today.

Beyond this wall lay the Bruch, now known as the Faubourg de Bitche, bearing witness to the site’s strategic and historical importance.

A place steeped in history and renewal

Built in 1603, this magnificent building has stood the test of time, serving various purposes over the centuries, notably as a chancellery between 1677 and 1752. Having stood empty for many years, it was completely renovated in 2010 using high-quality materials.
