The raven bearing the Steuernagel coat of arms: a rediscovered treasure at L’Écrevisse

At the heart of L’Écrevisse, every stone tells a story. Among the many remarkable features of this building, which dates back to 1603, a recently rediscovered detail is now attracting everyone’s attention: a carved corbel depicting the Steuernagel coat of arms.

An exceptional discovery in March

Long hidden beneath a thick layer of ivy, this ancient raven located on the left side of the façade remained concealed for many years. It was not until March that it was brought to light, revealing the full richness of its decoration and its historical significance.

This rediscovery highlights a forgotten element of architectural heritage, a testament to the building’s prestigious past.

The Steuernagel Family Coat of Arms

This corbel bears the Steuernagel family coat of arms, for whom Georges Steuernagel, the mayor, had this building constructed in 1603. This heraldic symbol is not unique: it was also affixed to the corbel of another house built during the same period, beyond the city walls.

This same coat of arms can also be found in the courtyard of 32A, further proof of the influence and mark left by this family on local history.

A building at the heart of the city’s history

At the time of its construction, the building was located near the western city wall, which, around 1600, stood near the washhouse. Part of this wall is still visible today.

Beyond this wall lay the Bruch, corresponding today to the Faubourg de Bitche, attesting to the site’s strategic and historical significance.

A place steeped in history and renewal

Built in 1603, this superb building has stood the test of time, serving various purposes, notably as a chancellery between 1677 and 1752. Left vacant for many years, it was fully renovated in 2010 using high-quality materials.
